We're are very pleased to be stocking the first IP68 connector of its kind in the UK. This has taken many years of research and development to make IP68 connectors available on the market and after carrying out extensive tests, we believe that this will make installation jobs much swifter.
However, care should still be taken when making these connections. It's important to leave yourself a little bit more copper contact room that usual, such is the nature of the clips when aligned. To make this clear please see the following photo:
As we can see, the transparent cover has a machine-cut hole on the face, which allows for the pins on the connector to pierce through to the PCB. By leaving enough copper, we can slide the strip fully in and still have enough room to pierce through the contact points. If you imagine instead that you cut directly along the cutting point (as would normally be the case) and then push it further, you would be exposing the chip to the pins, which can cause direct damage and shorten out a 5cm section.
If you can follow the advice above you will achieve a perfect connection. No other requirements are needed. This will be fully water-protected, without the need for silicon.
