With LED technology improving every day, LED strips are now able to be manufactured with up to 700 LEDs per metre - That's a cutting point of every 1cm! Because of the density and size of these chips, this means that it's not possible to join lengths together with conventional strip-to-strip or strip-to-wire connectors. So, we need to go back to basics and good old soldering. But, before we do, we need to know the best way to cut strips of this design.
Cutting LED tape from 240 to 700 LEDs per metre is not simply a case of grabbing a pair of scissors; we need far better precision. There is one of two ways to do this.
Method 1:
First, we can bend our tape until we have a comfortable cutting line.
Next, place a sharp cutting blade on the underside and position it as central as possible.
If sharp enough, the knife should cut through like butter.
Method 2: (the safer way)
Using a pair of Micro Nippers (do not attempt with anything larger), cut along the copper-plated cutting point from both sides of the strip, making sure not to pass the chip itself.
Once both sides are cut, gently twist the strip like so:
You will be able to simply snap the strip clean, once fully twisted.
This just leaves you with the job of soldering.
