Hi-Line Lighting supplies two different types of solderless connectors. The easy way to differentiate between them is by referring to them as "Hippo Connectors" and "White Connectors".
When Hi-Line started to design and manufacture solderless connectors for LED Strips, the simpler white model shown here was ideal for connecting slimmer tape for smaller installations. They are still used by electricians but with the advances in technology they've gradually become surpassed by our High-current connectors, which are commonly referred to as "Hippo Connectors", seen here. Like the white connectors, these latest models are available in 8mm, 10mm and 12mm options and are perfect for Single-Colour and RGB strips of all IP ratings (however, RGBW strips at 10mm do not have available "Hippo Connectors"). Additionally, these connectors can be attached to IP65 splashproof strips, without having to remove its surface coating gel, and because they are designed without any wires, you can customize the LED strip wire-tail according to your installation needs.
When purchasing the High-current connectors, please note that IP65 connectors will not fit IP00 strips and vice versa.
As we state on every product page, soldering is suggested as an ideal solution, but while we know our own connectors to be the best quality and have the highest amperage available on the market today, we do acknowledge that there are limitations and that they can't be used for just any length of strip (current limits apply). Installers should make sure that they use our high-current connectors and that they don't exceed 5A per connection (that is the maximum amperage, we suggest to stay 20% less than that).
Moreover, it's imperative that you don't try to mix and match connector types. Even if the IP rating and width is the same between them, the fact they handle amperage differently can result in problems later.
